Lions International District 404A2 Nigeria, under the leadership of District Governor Lion Sir Maurice Ibok, Ph.D., PMJF, NLCF, has constructed and officially handed over a skills acquisition center to the University of Calabar. This initiative aligns with their commitment to community empowerment and sustainable development.

During the handover ceremony, Lion Maurice Ibok emphasized that the project aims to support street children and disadvantaged youth by equipping them with vocational training and essential life skills. The initiative is designed to tackle issues of youth unemployment and social marginalization.

He noted that establishing the facility within the University of Calabar ensures its long-term sustainability through proper oversight and integration into an academic environment. The university’s endorsement was essential to anchoring the program within a reputable educational structure.

“This project reflects the core values of the Lions Club, which include promoting education, empowering youth, and fostering community growth. It highlights our focus on sustainable, impactful action rather than short-term charitable gestures,” he stated.

He further described the initiative as a strategic investment in human development, made possible through a partnership with a credible institution, aimed at delivering lasting benefits to society.

The vice chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, in her response, praised the Lions Club for their foresight in providing underprivileged children with practical skills relevant to today’s workforce.

Prof. Obi noted that the center supports her broader vision of preparing students to become self-sufficient and job-ready after graduation.
